Defence of Boswell Trophy at Flempton

          26th September

Following last years memorable triumph of the Boswell Trophy competition against the provinces of Norfolk. Suffolk and Cambridgeshire
in 2018, the eagerly anticipated return competition was held at Flempton Golf Course on 26th September. The Province of Cambridge
had the honour to be the organisers this year.
The Flempton is located just outside of Bury St Edmunds and is a challenging 9 hole heathland course overlooking a nature reserve.
Weather was fine and clear, the course was in great condition and well drained despite some recent rain.

There were 9 players selected to represent each team. The games were arranged as nine 4 player groups , each consisting of one
player from each Province. So the day was a very enjoyable, social and friendly event.
The Provincial Grand Masters from the other Provinces were keen to play on the day so made up a 4 ball of their own which included
our own W. Bro. Peter Hollingsworth who represented our PGM in that game.
The opposition for this year’s competition had clearly decided they were going to each make every effort to knock Essex off of the
winners’ podium for this year. They fielded 3 very strong teams against us. Each of our team played a fine, tactical game of golf and
didn’t lose too many balls…. It would be churlish to suggest that the opposition had picked a date to ensure some of our team from
the previous year would be otherwise disposed at a masonic gathering, (Essex First Principals). No, they must have practiced and
trained hard for months to make sure they were on top form; the end result was that Essex came 4th on the day and had to hand over
       the Boswell Trophy to Norfolk.
Next year’s Boswell Trophy competition is being organised by the Essex Masonic Golf Association for the 23rd April 2020 at Thetford,
Norfolk. That course was chosen because it is centrally located to all 4 counties and renowned for its high quality golf course, beer
       and food.
In addition to the day at Thetford, the Essex Masonic Golf Association have 4 other events planned for 2020 when we will be in friendly
competition against other provinces including West Kent, The Metropolitan Grand Lodge , Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
