He joined the Territorial Army in 1938 before going to an Annual Camp for 2
weeks in 1939. It turned out to be the longest fortnight of his life as he didn’t
return until 1947! During that time he was selected for the Indian Army and
served in many operational engagements including Famine Relief in Bengal
(during which he received a Viceroys Commendation), Commando operations in
the Naga Hills, riots in Bombay and Calcutta and patrol duties in the Khyber Pass
prior to Indian Independence in 1947 after which he resigned his commission in
the rank of Major.
Peter then joined the London Electric Wire Company as an accountant, rising to
Director when it was taken over by The General Electric Company. He became
Chairman of the Trade Council for the Wire & Cable Industry before becoming
the founding Chairman of a European Council for the industry prior to the UK
entering the Common Market. It was for his work in this area that he was awarded
the OBE for Services to Industry. There is a lot more to W.Bro. Peter’s life than
can be put into a few short paragraphs and you can always be assured of an
interesting chat over the festive board!
