Diss Golf Competition
4 Counties Inter Provincial Golf match
September 2018
n 4th September, Essex Masonic Golf Association participated
Oin the revival an inter provincial golf competition known as
the Boswell Trophy, last won by Essex 17 years ago in 2001. The
tournament originated from the Province of Suffolk in recognition
of David Boswell - a prominent Suffolk Freemason.
Located on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk. Just south of the river Waveney Diss golf club was founded in 1903 with 9 holes.
Parts of the existing course were used for testing of ordinance during the 1st and 2nd world wars, so there are some interesting
big craters, lumps and bumps in the fairways and around the greens to contend with. Fortunately, the Royal Engineers had been in
attendance to make sure nothing was left behind after the tests !
The other teams from the other provinces were , as you would expect of Freemasons very friendly we were all well received . The
Essex team of 8 players fought off stiff and determined opposition from the Provinces of Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridge.
The 4 Essex pairs won the competition with a final score of 146 (closest rival score was 137). The Essex team produced an average
team score of 36.5 with the top team score of 39 by Ross Martin and Dale Rayner. The other pairs in the Essex team were Andy
Pearson, Eric Mould, Jeff Cripps and Paul Fermin, Paul Clark and Michael Fox
Next round of the Boswell Trophy will be hosted September 2019 by the Province of Cambridge at Newmarket Golf Club. Other
home and away competitions against other Provinces will be held throughout 2019.
If any Essex Mason would like to register an interest to take part in golf
days out against other Provinces, please contact Steve Wall 07957-891619
Stevewall04@gmail.com - There are no expectations regarding ability or
possession of a formal handicap.
Most important thing is we have a good social, fun time playing some golf
- and win when we can !
Stisted Hall Summer Fete
the ‘Provincials’ Debut
he 2018 Stisted Hall Summer Fete was a great success and raised
Tin excess of £6500 which will be used entirely by the Association of
Friends in providing the Residents with a better quality of life in their
stay at the Hall.
Preparations are underway for the 2019 event and it is hoped that Lodges/
Chapters will support the event by attending or perhaps having a stall at
the Fete. Once again the Provincial Grand Master/Grand Superintendent
Rodney Lister Bass OBE will be opening the Fete at 2pm and giving it his
full support.
The ticket price remains at £5 but this year, due to rising costs, we are no
longer able to include free cream teas, these will be available to purchase
along with other refreshments. Children under 12 have free entry.
At the Fete there will be a
special performance by the
‘Provincials’ a band comprised
of members of the Provincial
Executive and other Essex
Masons. This should prove
very entertaining.
This is the only annual event
where Essex Masons, their
families and friends can meet
and relax on a social basis in
lovely surroundings and raise
money for a special cause. It
is hoped that many will come
along to enjoy the day. The
gates open at midday on
Sunday the 14th July.
Tickets are available from
Lodge/RA Chapter Charity
Stewards or from the Fete
