Provincial Grand Lodge
COMMUNITY
The word community comes from the old French
communité, derived from the Latin word cum
(with or together) and munus (gift). It is a broad
term for a fellowship or organised society.
A local community is a group of people living
in a common location or organised as a group
with common values in a geographical area.
Working together with common goals and sharing
responsibility gives people a ‘sense of community’.
Freemasons make themselves aware of and
understand the needs of the local communities
around them. They respect community members
and get involved in community engagement
programmes.
CHARITY
Freemasons are motivated by sympathy and
understanding for the needs of others. They
appreciate that no one is so poor that they cannot
give either money or their time to help others.
Working together with other Lodge members,
Freemasons willingly and generously give their time
and money to support local communities and those
poorer than themselves.
Freemasons are charitable in their opinions of
others. In giving criticism kindly, doing kind acts and
speaking with sympathetic words, they are large-
hearted ‘Charitable Mentors’.
FRIENDSHIP
Freemasonry offers a whole new world of
friendship. It admits people with many differences
of character who blend together and enjoy each
other’s company at lodge meetings, festive boards
and other social events.
The association between Freemasons meeting
regularly is more like a group of people working
together for a common cause. It is this comradery
which leads to the many life-long friendships found
within the membership.
Freemasons are judged on what they do for society
and a man is judged by the company he keeps.
Nothing is better than the value of friendship which is
found among Freemasons working together to help
our local communities.
