Cyrus Sasana Council of Knight Masons No.103
n the morning of the 22nd February 2020 the Installation meeting of Council 103 took place at Saxon Hall,
Southend. For readers of the Essex Mason, the Grand Council of Knight Masons is an Irish Order which now
Ohas eleven Councils in its Province of England and Wales. Cyrus Sasana Council 103 was the fourth Council to
be constituted and dedicated and the ceremony took place at Saxon Hall in September 2013.
Following an invitation from Council 103 several senior Knight Masons were in attendance having flown in the evening before from
Dublin, Ireland. The Council was honoured to receive the Most Excellent Great Chief, Bernard V.A. Woods, Right Excellent Sir Knight
Derek J. Moffatt, Right Excellent Sir Knight Selwyn Davies, Right Excellent Sir Knight John S. Haynes, Right Excellent Sir Knight
Reg Richards and Sir Knight James MacCafferty. In addition, Council 103 was honoured with the presence of the Provincial Grand
Superintendent for England and Wales, Major A.J. Darlison. Major Darlison’s Deputy for Southern England is Right Excellent Sir Knight
Ray Fretten, who was the Primus Excellent Chief of the Council.
The actual installation ceremony of Excellent Chief included not only Sir Knight Gordon MacLean of Council 103 but also Sir Knight
Nigel Willows of Grafton Council 100, London, this with dispensation from the Most Excellent Great Chief. Sir Knights MacLean and
Willows were installed by Very Excellent Sir Knight Mel Goodchild.
Before the installation meeting the Most Excellent Great Chief rose to announce that he was honouring Excellent Sir Knight Richard
James Goodwin with the rank of Past Very Excellent Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies, which was greeted by applause. He
stated that (now) VESK Richard had assisted several of the other Councils in the Southern area and his dedication was well worthy of
this honour. The Great Chief then expressed his congratulations
to the members of Cyrus Sasana Council for the quality of the
ritual during the Meeting, and he was very pleased to return to
Council 103 for the first time since 2013.
During the ceremony VESK Richard Goodwin presented Founder
Jewels to both the Great Chief and RESK Derek Moffatt. RESK
Selwyn Davies who is the Excellent Chief of Cyrus Council 29
in Dublin, the mother Council of 103, presented a beautiful
glass dish suitably engraved with a presentation message
from Council 29 to ESK Gordon MacLean for the Cyrus Sasana
Council.
Following the Meeting some thirty Sir Knights enjoyed a
very friendly fraternal luncheon, with many members of 103
remaining with the Irish contingent until they left for Southend
airport at 6.30pm to depart home to Ireland. They safely arrived
back on home ground at Dublin airport at 9.00pm.
